Centre Doubling Chhotu LPG Cylinder Quota Is Practical Relief For Migrant Workers
The Centre has taken a practical fuel-supply step for migrant workers and smaller households. The daily allocation of 5-kg free trade LPG cylinders, commonly known as Chhotu cylinders, has been doubled for states.
The decision matters because LPG access is not only about regular domestic cylinders. Many migrant workers, students, single workers and people living in temporary accommodation depend on smaller cylinders for cooking. For them, the compact cylinder is often the most accessible fuel option.
The move comes at a time when LPG supply is under public watch because of tensions in West Asia and the uncertainty around the Hormuz route. The government has asked people not to panic, but it is also trying to make the distribution system more flexible.
The actual impact will depend on how quickly states move the increased allocation to retail points and high-demand pockets. If the cylinders reach migrant clusters and low-storage households on time, the relief will be directly visible.
The bigger point is that energy security is not only about tankers, refineries and import routes. It is also about whether cooking fuel reaches the kitchen. The next test is how states prioritise and distribute the increased Chhotu cylinder supply.
