Nine Tamil Nadu Policemen Get Death Sentence In Sattankulam Case
The Sattankulam custodial deaths case has reached a dramatic sentencing stage, nearly six years after the deaths of trader P Jayaraj and his son J Benicks shocked the country.
A court in Tamil Nadu's Madurai district has awarded the death sentence to nine policemen in connection with the case. The father and son were arrested during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020 and died days later after alleged custodial torture.
The case became a national symbol of police brutality because of the severity of the allegations, the public outrage that followed, and the later CBI investigation. Reports say the case was transferred to the CBI after directions from the Madras High Court.
For citizens, the verdict raises two conversations at once: accountability in one specific case, and the larger question of safeguards against custodial violence. A harsh sentence may bring a sense of justice, but it does not by itself fix the systems that allow abuse to happen.
Editors should handle this story with care and avoid graphic details beyond what is necessary. The sentencing is major, but appeals may follow.
