Refinery Maintenance Delays Show India Is Watching Fuel Supply In Emergency Mode

Indian state-run refiners have started delaying routine maintenance so domestic fuel supplies remain stable. Reports say Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corporation have postponed shutdowns at some units. In normal times, refinery maintenance is a planned industrial activity. But when supply chains are under pressure, delaying maintenance is a signal that companies and the government are prioritising availability. The uncertainty in West Asia and around the Hormuz route has made India's energy planning more sensitive. India imports a large share of its oil and LPG needs. If cargoes are delayed or shipping costs rise, refineries need to maximise domestic output. Officials have indicated that refineries are operating at high capacity. That can help consumers through stable supply, but technically it also makes maintenance planning more complicated if the pressure lasts. This story matters because fuel security is not only about petrol pump prices. Refinery schedules, LPG output, import routes and emergency planning all decide whether cylinders, transport fuel and industrial supplies remain steady.
