Amit Jogi Sentenced To Life In 2003 Ramavatar Jaggi Murder Case

A political murder case from 2003 has returned to the national spotlight after the Chhattisgarh High Court sentenced former MLA Amit Jogi to life imprisonment. The case relates to the killing of NCP leader Ramavatar Jaggi in Raipur. Amit Jogi, son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, had earlier been acquitted by a trial court in 2007, but that acquittal was challenged through appeals and revision petitions. A special division bench of the High Court has now overturned the acquittal and convicted him on charges including criminal conspiracy and murder with common intention, according to reports. The court has directed him to surrender within three weeks. This is legally significant because the case has had a long and complicated path, including CBI investigation, allegations of political conspiracy, and prolonged litigation. Amit Jogi has moved the Supreme Court, which has admitted the matter, but reports say no interim relief has been granted so far. Before publishing, editors should keep the language precise: this is a High Court conviction, and the next important legal step is the Supreme Court hearing scheduled later in April.
